Mind the Gap: a Tragic Waste of Talent
叠测听听
Recently, I was chatting with a close friend who holds a senior position at a Fortune 50 company. 听This is someone who is utterly driven, obsessed with work and defined in large part by his professional life, rarely slowing down to catch his breath. 听But a back injury had听forced听him to slow down. 听In fact, the injury was significant enough that he鈥檇 been compelled to take a medical leave for a couple of months. 听
Now my buddy was due to return to work, and I asked him how he was feeling. 听His answer stunned me. 听Having taken a step back from the day to day grind, my friend had a better picture of the big picture. 听And it was coming up somewhat empty. 听
鈥淚 wish I felt more of a sense of purpose. 听Like it all added up to something more meaningful.鈥 听Without that sense of larger purpose, his job now felt like something that just took him away from his kids. 听
What about your company鈥檚 volunteering program, I asked. 听Are you involved with that?
I guess there鈥檚 a corporate volunteering program, he said vaguely. 听Maybe I鈥檝e overlooked a few emails about it here and there. 听But I really don鈥檛 hear much about it. 听So, no. 听
This is a high-level executive who only has a dim understanding of how he can engage in his company鈥檚 attempts at听. 听And if someone at his level is in the dark, you can assume that much of the rest of the company is as well.
My friend is, in fact, rather philanthropic and active in his community. 听But his charitable involvement all takes place on his own time. 听Work is work. 听Community work is up to him. 听
At least that鈥檚 how he sees it. 听And that鈥檚 a terrible shame. 听
From my own conversations with the CSR leaders at my buddy鈥檚 company, I know听exactly听what鈥檚 going on behind the scenes. 听I鈥檓 well aware of how much this global corporation is trying to create a meaningful employee volunteer program. 听But clearly they鈥檙e failing. 听
