How Nonprofits Can Promote Matching Gifts on #GivingTuesday by Using Double the Donation

Nearly two-thirds of employers surveyed inÌý¾«¶«Ó°Òµ’s Charities’ Snapshot Employer Report, indicate they match employee payroll contributions.ÌýThis is a 58% increase since 2006. Corporate matches are becoming a central driving force that incentivizes employees to donate to charities through workplace initiatives. But if you’re a nonprofit, there is another way to leverage matching gifts using your existing donor database.

Matching Gifts

Many companies will match tax-deductible charitable contributions made by their employees either dollar-for-dollar or at another predetermined amount. Often, employees are encouraged to take advantage of matching gifts by participating in their company’s workplace giving program. Sometimes, companies establish a set dollar amount that they will match per employee each year, and that donation doesn’t have to be made through workplace giving. Instead, an employee can make a donation to a charity of their choice anytime throughout the year and then follow their company’s matching gift guidelines to request a match of that gift. Ìý

But, many donors are not aware their company matches gifts. That’s where nonprofits can utilize a neat tool from to tap into their existing donors. Nonprofits typically have to pay for this tool, but from November 11, 2014 – December 19, 2014, Double the Donation is giving away the use of its tool for free to nonprofits in celebration of #GivingTuesday 2014.

By following a couple steps on , nonprofits will be able to market matching gifts to their list of exisitng donors. ÌýWhen those donors go to utilize the tool, they will see something similar to the graphic below. ÌýThey can type in the name of their employer, see if their employer matches gifts, and then follow the appropriate steps to request that their gift to your nonprofit be matched.Ìý
