Disasters and the Health of Our Children – A National Priority

Floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, droughts.Ìý Natural disasters affect people of all ages, but they can hit children the hardest.Ìý Irwin Redlener, M.D., president and co-founder of Children’s Health Fund, as well as the head of the National Center for Disaster Preparedness, is a recognized expert in disasters and their consequences for the health of those affected by them. In recent articles in two major publications – USA Today and The Nation – Dr. Redlener connects the dots between natural disasters and the health of children, insisting that we must recognize the many ways disasters can interfere with the development of young minds and bodies, and proposing that disaster preparedness can be preventive medicine for ¾«¶«Ó°Òµâ€™s kids.
