Each day, while elected officials debate political and legislative solutions,听听incredible staff educates the public and provides training and model policies that alter the fundamental nature of the institutions that govern our everyday lives. From policy that guides a听, to the moral truths that shape how a pastor interacts with a congregation or a community 鈥 HRC approaches LGBTQ life holistically, looking for ways that their work can make a more inclusive and accepting world for everyone, in every part of their life.

Take HRC鈥檚 work with听: Before an agency can earn HRC鈥檚 seal signifying it is a leader in supporting and serving LGBTQ families and youth, they must first ensure that the agency has the right policies in place. Then they train every single employee on what those policies mean and why they鈥檙e important.

Or consider HRC鈥檚听. Even as they push for inclusive federal anti-discrimination laws, the fact is that millions of workplaces today offer equal benefits to LGBTQ employees, including coverage for same-sex partners and transgender-inclusive healthcare policies. Many adopted these policies through working closely with the hardworking staff of the HRC Foundation. And with continued support from donors, HRC can help more corporations implement LGBTQ-friendly policies by delivering the training and other critical resources they need to move forward.

滨苍听, HRC meets with families and leaders to foster understanding about how to support LGBT loved ones, not in spite of religion but because of it. We amplify the voices of the faith leaders who are already with us in an effort to change the media鈥檚 narrative when it comes to what religious people think about our lives and our families.

Through the , HRC leverages their domestic LGBTQ work to have international impact. HRC Global helps counter draconian laws aimed at suppressing sexual minorities. They are also training a new generation of leaders. The HRC Foundation鈥檚 current global fellows hail from Turkey and Bangladesh. Their work with HRC Global with help move the LGBTQ movement forward in their home countries. From calling out 精东影业ns for exporting hate to advocating for an LGBTQ-inclusive foreign policy, HRC envisions a world that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.

The HRC Foundation does this work alongside employers and employees, pastors and parishioners, doctors and teachers, neighbors and advocates. They change hearts and minds all along the way, across the United States and around the world, to enhance the lived experiences of LGBT people and families everywhere.

They know that they can make great progress by engaging directly with institutions that affect our day-to-day lives 鈥 schools, churches, hospitals and workplaces.

This work takes tremendous expertise, patience and diligence. Support from donors gives HRC the strength to meet their highest goals while we march down this long road toward full LGBTQ equality.

For nearly five decades, the has been fighting hate and seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of society.

Founded 47 years ago by attorneys Morris Dees and Joseph Levin, the SPLC used newly passed civil rights laws to dismantle remnants of Jim Crow in the Deep South. In the ensuing years, the SPLC shut down some of the nation鈥檚 most violent white supremacist groups by winning crushing, multimillion-dollar jury verdicts on behalf of their victims. It has reformed juvenile justice practices; shattered barriers to equality for women, children, the LGBT community, and the disabled; protected immigrant workers and the poor from exploitation; and more.

At this moment in 精东影业n history when our country is so deeply divided, the work of the SPLC is more vital than ever.

Fighting Hate

The SPLC defines a hate group as an organization that 鈥 based on its official statements or principles, the statements of its leaders, or its activities 鈥 has beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people, typically for their immutable characteristics. Often, but not always, hateful speech incites violence and sometimes is considered evidence of a hate crime. During 2017, our Intelligence Project tracked 954 hate groups and published our annual report depicting the location and ideology of the groups. This is the third year in a row that the number of hate groups has increased, most notably among anti-Muslim groups.

The SPLC has taken the following steps, among others, to combat this rising tide of extremism:

  • Litigating against the worst of these groups in a manner similar to lawsuits the SPLC has used to win crippling court judgments against 10 major white supremacist organizations and 50 individuals who led them or participated in violent acts. Most recently, for example, we鈥檝e sued Andrew Anglin, the founder of the most heavily trafficked neo-Nazi website, who orchestrated a harassment campaign that has relentlessly terrorized a Jewish woman and her family with anti-Semitic threats and messages.
  • Distributing new 鈥渞oll call鈥 training videos to more than 40,000 law enforcement officers across the country to help them recognize, respond to, and report hate crimes properly and promptly. Our training videos also help law enforcement officers prepare for hate group rallies in their local communities.
  • Holding Silicon Valley companies accountable to their own rules forbidding hate groups from exploiting their services to raise money and spread demonizing propaganda that radicalizes young people and encourages violence.

Teaching Tolerance

The SPLC鈥檚 project provides free anti-bias educational materials such as webinars, lesson plans, professional development, and other classroom resources. The SPLC has taken several steps to support schools that are feeling the consequences of inflamed racial and ethnic tensions:

  • Distributing free resources designed to help teachers and school administrators counter harmful stereotypes and stop the bullying and harassment of children whose races, ethnicities, and religions are targeted by hateful rhetoric.
  • Providing educators with practical advice and strategies to help them support children of immigrants and immigrant children who may be affected by anti-immigrant policies and sentiment.
  • Launching Teaching Tolerance鈥檚 most recent initiative, , to address the fact that the majority of students leave school without an adequate understanding of the role slavery played in the development of the United States 鈥 or how its legacies still influence us today.

Seeking Justice

The SPLC stands up in court for the powerless, the exploited, and other victims of discrimination and hate. With a staff of more than 100 lawyers and legal advocates, the SPLC focuses on impactful litigation in these five practice areas: immigrant justice; economic justice; criminal justice reform; LGBT rights; and children鈥檚 rights. 听Examples of our current projects include:

  • Representing immigrants caught in the nation鈥檚 deportation machine with pro bono legal services at five detention centers in the Southeast as part of our (SIFI).
  • Exposing the abuse of prisoners stemming from mass incarceration policies and the exploitative, for-profit prison industry.
  • Using legislation and litigation to reform the criminal justice system and eliminate excessive court fees, modern-day debtors鈥 prisons, and other practices that unfairly punish or exploit the poor.

These are a just a few of the ways the SPLC continues听to promote and protect our nation鈥檚 most cherished ideals and stand up for those who have no other champions. Whether this mission takes the SPLC into the courts, the classroom, or elsewhere, it remains devoted to creating a better future by fighting hate, teaching tolerance, and seeking justice.

For nearly five decades, the Southern Poverty Law Center has been fighting hate and seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of society.

Attorney Morris Dees of the Southern Poverty Law Center show a membership manual distributed by the Imperial Klans of 精东影业 as he gives his closing argument in a civil suit against the Imperial Klans of 精东影业In the early 1970s, the fledgling nonprofit in Montgomery, Alabama, used newly passed civil rights laws to dismantle remnants of Jim Crow in the Deep South.

Today, the work of the SPLC is more vital than ever. The 2016 presidential election exposed deep racial fissures across the nation and energized a radical movement that rejects our country鈥檚 most fundamental ideals. As a result, the SPLC is taking action on several fronts.

Fighting Hate

In 2016, the country saw a resurgence of white nationalism as extremist beliefs and rhetoric infiltrated the mainstream. The SPLC鈥檚 annual census of hate groups and extremist organizations found the number of hate groups in the United States rose for a second year in a row, from 892 in 2015 to 917 a year later.

The most dramatic growth was the near-tripling of听anti-Muslim hate groups听鈥 from 34 in 2015 to 101 last year. The growth has been accompanied by a rash of hate crimes targeting Muslims. The SPLC has taken the following steps, among others, to combat this rising tide of extremism:

  • Distributing new hate crime training videos to more than 40,000 law enforcement officers across the country to help them fight violent hate crime.
  • Equipping university students with free resources to help them peacefully and effectively counter growing extremism on campuses propelled by the speeches and appearances of alt-right personalities.
  • Holding Silicon Valley companies accountable to their own rules forbidding hate groups from exploiting their services to raise money and spread demonizing propaganda that radicalizes young people and encourages violence.

Teaching Tolerance

Teaching ToleranceThe SPLC鈥檚 Teaching Tolerance project documented serious issues within the nation鈥檚 classrooms following a presidential campaign that inflamed racial and ethnic tensions. Its post-election survey of 10,000 educators found a distinct uptick in verbal harassment, the use of slurs and derogatory language, and disturbing incidents involving swastikas, Nazi salutes, and Confederate flags. Ninety percent of the respondents said that their school鈥檚 climate had been negatively affected 鈥 and most believed the impact would be lasting.

Teachers are also trying to cope with terrified children facing the possible deportation of parents and the shattering of their families under a new immigration enforcement regime. In light of these findings, the SPLC has taken several steps, including the following:

  • Distributing free resources designed to help teachers and school administrators counter harmful stereotypes and stop the bullying and harassment of children whose races, ethnicities, and religions were targeted by hateful rhetoric during the election.
  • Providing educators with practical advice and strategies to help them deal with the crisis and chaos experienced by schoolchildren living in immigrant families.
  • Launching a new initiative to help impressionable children see through 鈥渇ake news鈥 and extremist propaganda.

Seeking Justice

SPLC criminal justice reformThe SPLC is addressing numerous issues in the courts and the halls of government 鈥 people of color victimized by institutional racism in the criminal justice system; low-income people left behind as the government shreds the social safety net; schoolchildren needlessly pushed out of school and into jail cells; LGBT people facing discrimination; and many more. In 2017, the SPLC is taking additional steps to seek justice for those who may be harmed by a new administration that appears set on rolling back protections for the most vulnerable.

  • Launching a new project to enlist, train, and coordinate hundreds of pro bono lawyers to protect the due process rights of immigrants caught in the nation鈥檚 immigration dragnet. 听

Whether this mission takes the SPLC into the courts, the classroom or elsewhere, it remains devoted to creating a better future by fighting hate, teaching tolerance, and seeking justice.

鈥淒o not let anyone tell you otherwise: Youth homelessness is a socially determined problem, and solving it is not beyond this nation鈥檚 resources and abilities.鈥

Sobering Statistics

  • 1.7 million U.S. youth experience homelessness every year.
  • 50,000 youth sleep on the streets for six months or more each year.
  • One in every five children between ages 10 and 18 will run away.
  • Up to 40% of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ.
  • Every day, 13 at-risk youth will die due to assault, illness, or suicide trying to survive on the streets 鈥 that鈥檚 approximately 5,000 per year.
  • About one-quarter of youth experience homelessness within a year of aging out of the foster care system.
  • Compared to housed youth, homeless youth are 75% more likely to self-medicate and abuse substances to deal with trauma.

StandUp For KidsOur ImpactStandUp For Kids

Every year since 1990, StandUp For Kids has the privilege of working with hundreds if not thousands of youth under the age of 25. In 2016, we served 1,044 individuals unaccompanied and 472 young homeless families, providing separate instances of support. We also provided 15,501 meals or grocery bags and assisted 229 youth with housing. Our volunteers gave more than 43, 000 hours of their time.

To engage in our mission of ending the cycle of youth homelessness, we provide basic and ongoing resources in the form of Street Outreach, Outreach Centers, Apartment Support and Mentoring. We are proud of the fact that our volunteer teams and staff build trust and become a consistent resource to stabilize and otherwise help those youth that the rest of society ignored. Some work behind the scenes as unsung heroes and others are out front, serving as counselors and helping youth map out plans to get out of the cyclical nature of homeliness they are caught in, helping guide them to independence, education and self-sufficiency.

How You Can Help

Youth homelessness will only end when everyone rolls up their sleeves and harvests their contributions. You can provide the greatest help by offering monetary donations and volunteering your time. For every $1 received, StandUp For Kids allocates 84 cents directly to local and national programs to provide: Meals, Mental Health Services, Housing Support, Employment Support, Education and Youth Activities. Our programs need volunteers and mentors to assist in furthering our mission to end youth homelessness.

Almost half of all undergraduates in the U.S. attend community colleges, and many of Point Foundation鈥檚 current and past scholarship recipients first attended community colleges before pursuing a four-year degree. Recognizing how community colleges can serve as a bridge between high school and a bachelor鈥檚 degree, in 2016 Point launched a pilot program to help lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community college students achieve their goal of transferring to a four-year college or university degree program.

Point Foundation ScholarCompared with students who begin their college experience in a four-year degree program, a greater percentage of community college students are low-income and/or the first in their family to attend college. While the majority aim to transfer to a four-year program and earn a bachelor鈥檚 degree, less than half will do so within six years of first enrolling at a community college.听

LGBTQ students face additional challenges, including rejection by their families, higher rates of homelessness and, especially for transgender persons, being the victim of physical assault and violence. While 82% of the 11 students in the pilot year of Point鈥檚 community college scholarship recipients receive other forms of tuition aid, the same percentage of these LGBTQ students say they still struggle to pay for tuition and school-related expenses; compared with 53% of all first-year college students.

Point Foundation ScholarsFor Point, which is the nation’s largest scholarship-granting organization for LGBTQ students of merit, the community college scholarship program is another pathway it can help often marginalized young people progress toward a higher education degree; especially first generation students. Wells Fargo, a longtime partner of the Foundation, is providing support for this new initiative which will likely expand to 25 recipients for the 2017鈥2018 school year.

For Vanessa Watson, a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology and a 2016 scholarship recipient, the鈥 $3,700 financial award allowed her to shift from being a part-time to a full-time student.听听

鈥淚鈥檝e been able to focus more on school, take a larger course load, and become more involved with campus activities, including taking on leadership positions,鈥 she says.听听

As well as financial challenges, community college students seeking to advance to four-year degree programs also face transfer processes that are often confusing. The lack of peer role-models is especially acute for LGBTQ students seeking advice and guidance.

To help address these challenges, Point brings recipients of its community college scholarship to Los Angeles for a weekend symposium ahead of the fall semester each year. Symposium workshops focus on the college transfer process and preparing for the academic requirements of a bachelor鈥檚 degree program.听 The students also get to meet their peers from around the country, as well as current Point Scholars and Alumni.

鈥淎ffordability is only one of the roadblocks to a college degree,鈥 explained Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Point Foundation. 鈥淟GBTQ students, particularly those from low-income families, immigrants, and people of color, often feel alone as they try to navigate a path to higher education. Point鈥檚 goal is to provide LGBTQ students practical guidance and the emotional support that comes from knowing people want them to succeed and are here to help.鈥澨

The 2017 class of Point Foundation Community College Scholarship recipients will be announced in late June for LGBTQ Pride Month.听听For more information visit .

Throughout the year Point also organizes Leadership Education and Affinities Development (LEAD) consortiums where current and past scholarship recipients join board members and mentors from related professional and academic fields for skills-building and professional development workshops. A recent LEAD in San Francisco focused on Health and Medicine, with sessions about LGBTQ health care, HIV prevention, and health care policy. A summer LEAD in Washington D.C. focuses on policy and law, with presentations of case studies, and sessions on advancing advocacy issues.

鈥淲e are honored to be able to provide Point Scholars the opportunity to connect in-person to learn and exchange ideas as they prepare to be the next generation of LGBTQ leaders who will bring their talents to making our communities a better place for all,鈥 said Mario Acosta-Velez, Verizon鈥檚 Director of state government affairs and National President of GLOBE (Verizon鈥檚 LGBT employee resource group).

Along with Verizon, supporters of Point鈥檚 leadership events and programs include HSBC, TimeWarner Foundation, and Wells Fargo. By investing in education via Point Foundation these companies and their employees are helping to empower and enrich disenfranchised young people.

鈥淲ells Fargo is proud to support the Point Foundation in making access to a college possible for talented students who may have experienced obstacles in their education as a result of their sexual identities,鈥 said Georgette 鈥淕iGi鈥 Dixon, Wells Fargo’s Director of Strategic Partnerships. 鈥淭ogether with the Point Foundation, we seek to promote diversity and inclusion while helping promising LGBTQ students obtain their higher education goals.鈥

Join 精东影业’s Charities, now through December, as we highlight different nonprofits听and share how individuals and companies can听Shape the Future of various causes through workplace giving programs.

Since 1971, the has worked diligently to shape a better future for the country by fighting hate and bigotry and seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of society.

The nonprofit civil rights law firm has toppled institutional racism and stamped out remnants of Jim Crow segregation; destroyed some of the nation鈥檚 most violent white supremacist groups; and protected the civil rights of children, women, the disabled, immigrants and migrant workers, the LGBT community, institutionalized persons, and many others who faced discrimination, abuse or exploitation.

More than four decades after its founding, the SPLC鈥檚 work remains as vital as ever. A look at just two SPLC initiatives demonstrates the innovative ways it continues to pursue its mission of promoting and protecting our nation鈥檚 most cherished ideals by standing up for those who have no other champions.

Defending the Poor

In the Deep South, the poorest region in the country, the SPLC is working to ensure that the impoverished, especially in marginalized minority communities, are not punished and exploited because of their economic status. Unfortunately, as more towns and cities increasingly rely on fees and fines to fund local government, indigent residents are finding that they are not only facing an economic gap 鈥 they鈥檙e facing a justice gap.

In Alabama, the SPLC has helped shut down modern-day debtors鈥 prisons that lock up people too poor to pay traffic fines and fees levied by local courts. SPLC client Harriet Cleveland paid $140 a month toward her traffic fines in Montgomery, Alabama, but $40 was going to a for-profit company overseeing the 鈥減robation鈥 of people in her situation.

She paid thousands of dollars over several years, but when she had nothing left to give, she was thrown in jail 鈥 even though the practice of jailing indigent people for debt was outlawed in this country almost 200 years ago. The SPLC secured Harriet鈥檚 release and sued the city for violating her constitutional rights. The city agreed in a settlement to stop jailing the indigent and canceled its contract with the abusive probation company.

鈥淛ust like a mirage, it disappeared,鈥 Harriet said. 鈥淪o, thank goodness for that. That鈥檚 very, very inspiring to me.鈥

The SPLC continued its campaign to stop this exploitation of the poor, filing a lawsuit in a neighboring town engaging in the same practices with the company. It charged the company 鈥 which had contracts with about 100 Alabama towns 鈥 with violating federal racketeering laws. The town settled with the SPLC and ended its contract with the company. Warned by the SPLC that such practices are illegal, more than 70 other towns cut ties with the company, which eventually closed down its remaining offices in the state.

This campaign is just one example of the SPLC鈥檚 work to defend the rights of the poor and ensure that they are treated with fairness and dignity. It鈥檚 work that is desperately needed as more people are discovering that justice is too often tied to their bank account.

Teaching Tolerance

The SPLC鈥檚 Teaching Tolerance project is also working to ensure a better future by providing teachers with free anti-bias resources, including award-winning classroom documentaries, lesson plans and curricula as well as its magazine, Teaching Tolerance, which reaches approximately 450,000 educators.

This year, Teaching Tolerance released a new classroom documentary to educate students about the struggle for the right to vote and to inspire young people to become more civically engaged. Approximately 40,000 copies of Selma: The Bridge to the Ballot have been distributed to teachers across the country, providing them with a powerful tool during the 50th anniversary of the Selma-to-Montgomery voting rights march.

The film comes on the heels of the project鈥檚 third report examining civil rights education. That report found that coverage of the movement in U.S. classrooms remains woefully inadequate. To help improve civil rights education, Teaching Tolerance released a best practices guide designed to help teachers and school leaders ensure their lessons about the movement are robust and meaningful.

The project has also worked to help teachers prepare students for life in our increasingly diverse country by creating Perspectives for a Diverse 精东影业, a literacy curriculum designed to help teachers from kindergarten to high school ensure that classroom lessons provide perspectives that reflect this diversity.

And for more than a decade, Teaching Tolerance has helped students step out of their cliques and challenge stereotypes as part of听its National Mix It Up at Lunch Day听鈥 an event designed to foster respect among students by asking them to sit with someone new at lunch for just one day.

The October event is designed to help educators create schools where students see each other as individuals 鈥 not just members of separate groups.

These are a just a few of the ways the SPLC continues its fight for the most vulnerable members of society. Whether this mission takes the SPLC into the courts, the classroom or elsewhere, it remains devoted to creating a better future by fighting hate, teaching tolerance and seeking justice.

What a great day for our country!

With today鈥檚 historic U.S. Supreme Court ruling, marriage equality for the LGBT community is now enshrined in our Constitution.

Earlier lower-court decisions reaching the same result helped propel a positive change in public attitudes. We hope this ruling will do the same 鈥 because we still have a lot of work to do, particularly in the Deep South, where old attitudes are most slow to change.听

Members of the LGBT community, like our client听, are still being fired from their jobs because of who they are. People like our client听听are still fighting to receive medical care for the same reason. And LGBT people everywhere are still at risk of being the听听by those with hate in their hearts.

We鈥檒l have to continue to fight for the rights of the LGBT community for years to come.听

But, today, we pause to celebrate. A tremendous battle has been won.
