On May 21st, people across the country will come together to celebrate the inaugural Red Nose Day, a campaign dedicated to raising money for children and young people living in poverty. ��While poverty is no joke and certainly no fun, individuals celebrating this event will be having fun and making people laugh – all in the name of raising awareness and funds for this important cause. The day’s events will culminate in a three-hour entertainment TV special on NBC featuring the country’s favorite comedians, musicians and Hollywood stars. ��

While this is the inaugural year for Red Nose Day in the U.S., the UK has been celebrating this campaign for 30 years.��Thrown by the nonprofit organization Comic Relief, this event is an inspiring cultural phenomenon that unites people from all walks of life in the interest of saving and changing lives across the globe. ��

Comic Relief has selected a group of twelve��nonprofits that will benefit from Red Nose Day 2015, and ����Ӱҵ’s Charities is pleased to share two of our member charities, Feeding ����Ӱҵ and Children’s Health Fund, have been included. Half the money distributed will be spent here in the U.S. on projects close to home, while the other half will be spent in some of the poorest communities in the world in Africa, Asia and Latin ����Ӱҵ.

Where can you get a red nose?

Visit your local Walgreens or Duane Reade stores now through May 21 and purchase a red nose for $1, and 50 cents will go to Red Nose Day.

Feeding ����Ӱҵ provides free food and groceries to more than 46 million low-income ����Ӱҵns each year, through a nationwide network of 200 food banks that serve 60,000 grocery and meal programs.��“We are very grateful that Feeding ����Ӱҵ has been selected as a beneficiary of Red Nose Day,” said Bob Aiken, CEO of Feeding ����Ӱҵ. “Despite recent improvements in the economy, there are still millions of ����Ӱҵns who struggle to make ends meet on low incomes and part-times jobs. The need for emergency food services continues to be at record levels for most of our food banks. This donation will come at a very critical time for us.”

While access to health insurance is on the rise, many children still face barriers to care.��Some 15-20 million children live in federally designated Health Professional Shortage Areas where doctors are hard to find. Children in poverty may not have transportation to get to a doctor’s office. Or their parents may be unable to take a day off work to go with them.
