Jason Collins to be Honored by Point Foundation

Openly Gay NBA Player Will Receive Award at Point LeadershipDinner in Boston on July 25

Point will present its Leadership Award to听听of the Brooklyn Nets. Collins is the first openly gay athlete to play in any of the听four major North 精东影业n pro sports leagues (NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL).

Collins will receive the award at the Point Foundation鈥檚 Leadership Dinner on Friday, July 25 at听the听听in Boston. Rep.听, who was Collin鈥檚 college roommate at听Stanford University, will present the award to Collins. The Leadership Dinner is part of Point听Foundation鈥檚 annual听, held this year in Boston from听July 24 鈥 27. The 2014 conference theme is 鈥淥n the Freedom Trail to Full Equality.鈥

鈥淟eaders go where others fear to 鈥 they show the way 鈥 and that is what Jason Collins has done听in being the first professional sports player to come out as a gay man,鈥 said Jorge Valencia,听Executive Director and CEO of Point Foundation. 鈥淐ollins is an inspiration to so many young听LGBTQ athletes, and through his demonstration of courage and leadership he is an exemplary听role model for Point Scholars. We are honored to be able to present him with the Point听Leadership Award.鈥

Point Scholars (current and alumni) from around the U.S. will be traveling to Boston for the听Leadership Conference, where they will participate in sessions on career planning,听communications and advocacy skills, and panel discussions on topics including LGBTQ history,听and enjoy special tours of Boston.
