It’s been two weeks since Hurricane Sandy hit, leaving behind an estimated $50 billion dollars worth of damage, displacing New York and New Jersey residents and their pets from their homes, and causing a reported 110 deaths.

As these communities continue working diligently towards full recovery, we have been pleased to see a number of ¾«¶«Ó°Òµâ€™s Charities members coordinating efforts to provide support and on-the-ground assistance for those affected by Hurricane Sandy.Ìý

Highlighted below are some of those efforts, along with links to their web sites where you can discover ways to get involved, stay connected, and lend your support.

Dr. Delaney Gracy, Chief Medical Officer of Children’s Health Fund, has been one of the organizations working with the Mayor’s office to get mobile medical units to the hardest hit areas.Ìý So far the doctors have seen asthma patients, prescription refills, cuts and scrapes from cleaning homes.Ìý And to find out what the medical needs are on Staten Island volunteers have gone door to door asking people stuck in their homes.

As the nation’s largest domestic hunger relief organization, Feeding ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ has been providing food, water and other supplies to those affected by Hurricane Sandy.ÌýPrior to the storm, thousands of pounds of supplies were stationed near the anticipated disaster zone to make sure that those affected by Hurricane Sandy would have immediate access to food and water.

Through a network of more than 200 food banks and 61,000 food pantries, emergency shelters and soup kitchens, Feeding ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ has been able to reach into disaster affected communities with basic needs supplies including food, water and cleaning products.Ìý

Feed The Children designated 31 trucks of relief supplies to send into the devastated areas through partners and 11 FTC trucks arrived in New Jersey and New York for distribution this week.Ìý

Superstorm Sandy wrought havoc with the lives of people and pets in New Jersey and New York. The HSUS has rescued more than 250 animals from devastated areas, and we’re now caring for more than 480 animals in three emergency shelters—helping to relieve families as they begin to rebuild their lives. Happily, each day ushers in more reunions between people and their beloved pets—more than 200 have been reunited with or reclaimed by their owners.ÌýÌý

PetSmart Charities dispatched six of its Emergency Relief °Â²¹²µ²µ¾±²Ô’® vehicles, each stocked with $80,000 worth of crucial supplies, to a temporary distribution center in Syracuse, New York. The distribution center was set up on Wednesday, Oct. 31, and has been providing necessary supplies to animal welfare organizations and the pets impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Teams of volunteers from PetSmart Charities and the ASPCA have also been on-site providing assistance.
